What 𪔹 means
This exact shortened form is documented much later than the standard character.
The standard character 貂 appears in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions and manuscripts from ancient Chu. Shuowen Jiezi (《說文解字》), an early Chinese dictionary, places it in the broad old “mouse” category and describes it as a large, yellow-black animal from Hu and Dingling lands. Japanese kanji dictionaries give 𪔹 the Chinese-derived reading chō.
The Kangxi Dictionary cites the 1671 Zhengzitong (《正字通》), which calls 𪔹 an incorrect abbreviation. An account of court dress in the Han dynasty describes marten tails on officials’ caps and gives two origins: fur worn for warmth, or King Wuling of Zhao adopting northern dress as a rank badge.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𪔹 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
