What 𪣟 means
By 1751, a Qing wordbook records 𪣟 for “waterside.” 通俗編 (Tongsu bian), a collection of colloquial Chinese words, lists it as a local spoken term among forms missing from the reference works its author consulted.
In 1801, the Hangzhou chronicle 崇福寺志 says the busy row of shops along the Sha River was called 沙河𪣟. Its editor reads 𪣟 as a local sound-form of 壖/堧, words for land beside a river or city wall, and contrasts it with 壖 on a nearby stone inscription.
A 2012 Zhejiang place-name study proposes another link: 𪣟 may be 垾, a small dike that holds water. Treat this as a local proposal; the sources do not establish one meaning for every place name.
The surviving examples are local and colloquial; the 1801 Hangzhou account contrasts 𪣟 with 壖 on a stone inscription.
Do not treat the river-edge and dike readings as interchangeable.
