What 𪭎 means
A mask is one theory, not a settled origin. Early Shang forms of 鬼 show a human figure under a large head. One theory sees a masked ritual figure driving harmful spirits away; scholars debate the head’s meaning. A 2022 study rejected a similar sign on a bronze vessel from China’s Western Zhou dynasty as an 鬼 form because its strokes did not match the proposed parts.

1Why does 𪭎 show as a box on some devices?
