What 𪹚 means
It names the act of setting off firecrackers around a dragon. In 𪹚龍, the Hakka verb comes before 龍, “dragon,” and identifies the firecracker stage of the rite.
Away from that festival phrase, the surrounding language matters; the glyph alone does not settle a safe translation.
How did Miaoli’s firecracker-dragon rite develop?
It grew from New Year dragon-welcoming customs. A 2023 Taiwan Hakka Affairs Council account describes the sequence: prepare the dragon, paint in its eyes, welcome and follow it, set off firecrackers around it, then send it back to heaven. The blasts are meant to drive away misfortune and ask for peace, good weather, and a good harvest.
A history updated by Taiwan’s Hakka Affairs Council in 2024 traces the rite’s arrival in Taiwan to Hakka communities during the Qing dynasty. It describes the custom’s mid-20th-century popularity and later decline, and says Miaoli City began organizing the festival program in 1998.
A local university account from 2025 describes students training in the rite as part of local culture and shared memory.
Regional and culturally specific: outside Hakka or Miaoli context, pair it with the festival name or a plain gloss.
