What 𫁔 means
It writes suông: plain or unaccompanied, or said without follow-through.
In modern Vietnamese spelling, canh suông is watery soup short on ingredients, while hứa suông is a promise left as words. The adjective also describes moonlight that is bright but unclear, with a cold or dull feel.
A Vietnamese newspaper article dated 19 July 1951 uses lý luận suông for theory detached from practice. It spells the word in Quốc Ngữ, the Latin-based Vietnamese alphabet, so it documents the word's meaning rather than the age of this graph.
Where does this spelling come from?
It belongs to chữ Nôm, a script shaped to write Vietnamese speech.
After Vietnam's independence from China in 939 CE, scholars adapted Chinese characters and their components to write Vietnamese. A 1126 inscription at Linh Xứng Temple includes a Nôm character in a person's name. The often-cited 1209 inscription at Báo Ân Temple was recarved later, so its surviving Nôm forms need careful dating.

Questions people ask
2Is 𫁔 read kuáng or suông?
Both readings appear in different language records: Taiwan CNS11643 lists Mandarin kuáng, while Vietnamese Nôm references read the character as suông. Match the reading to the language.
Why does 𫁔 show as a box?
A box means the selected font does not include this rare ideograph. In 2026, Taiwan's CNS11643 entry says Windows 10 and later include it in the default MingLiU and DFKai-SB fonts; other setups depend on their installed fonts.
