Chinese Oar Variant

2780/4154

𫇛 is an old Chinese variant of 櫓, a character for an oar—the paddle used to row a boat. The Yupian, a Chinese character dictionary from around 543 CE, defines this variant as a boat-propelling implement. The Eastern Han word-origin book Shiming explains that a side-mounted 櫓 moves a boat by the rower’s strength. In simplified Chinese, the corresponding form is 橹; in traditional Chinese, it is 櫓.

Why does 𫇛 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
