Reduced form of 蠦

2991/4154

𫊮 is the reduced form of 蠦 (lú), a rare Chinese character preserved in old animal names. Yang Xiong’s Han-era dialect glossary Fangyan records it in a regional word for a gecko or lizard; the separate compound 蠦蜰 names an insect that fourth-century commentator Guo Pu identifies as a bedbug. The second character matters: 𫊮 alone does not tell you which animal is meant.

What 𫊮 means

It stands for 蠦, read lú in Mandarin.

In Fangyan, Yang Xiong gives Qin, Jin and Xixia as regions where 蠦𧔊 names a gecko or lizard; the passage records different names for other regions. It is a note on regional vocabulary, not one term shared everywhere.

The distinct word 蠦蜰 appears in the Erya, a classical Chinese glossary; Guo Pu’s note identifies the insect as a bedbug. Read the full compound to tell which historical animal term you are seeing.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𫊮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
