What 𫓘 means
A Japanese kanji reference lists 𫓘 with the reading さび, “rust.” It glosses the form with 錆 and explains its shape as 金 (“metal”) plus 腐 (“decay”), a compact picture of corrosion.
Why is 𫓘 in Chinese chemistry records?
It appears in a 1920 proposal for Chinese chemical names. Liang Kuo-chang’s system combined parts standing for elements with markers for chemical type or count; other characters in the same set named methane and ethane.
By 1932, China’s official chemistry rules had standardized a different naming system, using terms such as 甲烷 (“methane”) and 乙烷 (“ethane”).

Questions people ask
1Why does 𫓘 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
