What 𫔶 means
It names the upright divider at the center of an old doorway.
Here, “doorway post” means a short piece of wood standing in the middle of the opening, not a sill underfoot. Classical Chinese sources also use the same word for a gate in an outer city wall.
As a standalone word in Standard Chinese, 𫔶 is obsolete. It belongs to classical texts, historical dictionaries, and specialist writing about architecture.
What did 𫔶 do in classical ritual?
It guided who could pass through the doorway and where.
The Book of Rites, a Chinese text on ritual, includes a passage dated to the 4th–2nd centuries BCE. It describes a ruler entering through the middle. An attendant brushes the post, while an envoy avoids the center and the threshold.
The rule sends official business by one side and private business by the other. The post is a boundary as well as a piece of carpentry. In ancient Chinese settings, gates could separate household, community, and state, while their positions marked rank.
Is 𫔶 the same as 闑?
Yes. They are simplified and traditional written forms of one word.
Traditional-script material writes 闑; simplified-script material writes 𫔶. 闑 uses 門 where 𫔶 uses 门. Some Chinese character references also list 槷 as an alternative form associated with 闑.
臬 is the sound-giving component in both forms; 門 or 门 supplies the doorway element. This explains their written structure, but 臬 cannot replace the whole word.
Classical and specialist; as a standalone word in Standard Chinese, it is obsolete.
