What 𬀰 means
It is read rày, an older Vietnamese word for “now.”
A Hán-Nôm dictionary records it under rày in ngày rày năm xưa, roughly “this day in years past.” Here rày points to the present day while the phrase looks back.
How did Chữ Nôm develop?
Chữ Nôm adapted Chinese characters to write Vietnamese.
It developed after Vietnam’s independence in 939, as scholars used Chinese characters and parts of them to transcribe Vietnamese. The Unicode source record maps 𬀰 to the Hán-Nôm Coded Character Repertoire, published in Hà Nội in 2007; that dates the source collection, not the beginning of this graph’s use.
Vietnamese dictionaries mark rày as old or regional; this Nôm form belongs in historical or language-focused text.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𬀰 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
