What 𬣪 means
A ringing or many-voiced sound.
In Mandarin, 𧬨 is pronounced huì. The Han-dynasty Shuowen Jiezi is a Chinese-character dictionary compiled around 100 CE; it glosses 𧬨 as “sound.” The later Guangyun, a dictionary arranged by rhyme, says “many sounds.”
How does 𬣪 relate to 𧬨?
𬣪 is the simplified counterpart of 𧬨.
In 𧬨, 言 marks speech and 歲 cues the pronunciation. Shuowen quotes “有𧬨其聲” (“its sound resounds”), while the standard Book of Songs text has “有嘒其星” (“its stars are many”). Traditional commentary connects this to an alternate early version of the poem.
