What 𭁃 means
It opens the mantra in the Vajra division.
The text's Vajra division is named for the vajra, a ritual thunderbolt. It calls the sequence a mantra: a fixed formula recited in ritual.
Vajrabodhi translated the manual into Chinese during the Tang dynasty. The SAT project proposed this source glyph for Unicode 10.0 to preserve forms from the Taishō canon, a collection of Chinese Buddhist writings.
Why might 𭁃 appear as a box?
The current font may not include its glyph.
The SAT project's Unicode 10.0 list warns that browsers without its web font may not display the character. If the shape is absent, the text still contains 𭁃.

1Why does 𭁃 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
