Text symbol

What 𭎰 means

It means “add” or “increase”; it can also name a low wall. The Shijing, an early Chinese poetry collection, uses 埤益 for “add to.” Shuowen Jiezi, a Han-era character dictionary, analyzes 埤 as 土 (earth) plus 卑 for sound and glosses it “increase.” Later Chinese dictionaries also record “low wall.”

How does the reading change by language?

It depends on language and word context. Mandarin dictionaries list four Pinyin readings (romanized spellings): pí, pì, bì, bēi. Korean Hanja (Chinese-origin characters used in Korean) reads 埤 as bi (비), “add.” Present-day Taiwanese Hokkien (a Southern Min language) uses 埤 for low, wet ground, especially an irrigation reservoir.

1

Why does 𭎰 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
