What 𭾡 means

It names displaying a severed head after execution.

Chinese dictionaries link 𭾡 to 𥄉. The Shuowen Jiezi dictionary (around 100 CE) glosses it as “head turned down”; the Yupian dictionary (543 CE) says a severed head was hung on a pole for public display.

The “turned down” detail is disputed; the punishment’s public display is clear. In Classical Chinese, 𥄉 sounded like 梟, so writers used 梟 in 梟首. The Mandarin reading of 𥄉 is jiāo; 梟 alone can mean “owl.”
