Rare Chinese-script character

𭿘 is a rare Chinese-script character whose shape alone does not give a reliable reading. SAT records it as left-hand 目 (“eye”) plus right-hand 莖 (“stem”), so the surrounding passage is needed to understand it. The SAT Unicode 10.0 character list warns that its web font may not display in unsupported browsers.

What 𭿘 means

The SAT project sourced it from a printed Japanese Buddhist canon.

The Taishō Shinshū Daizōkyō is a Japanese edition of Buddhist scriptures published from 1924–1940. The SAT Daizōkyō Text Database proposed 𭿘 for encoding because it occurs in that edition. Unicode added its digital identifier in 2017; the printed source predates that encoding.

Questions people ask

Why does 𭿘 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
