Rare written form of 瞑

𭿜 is a nonstandard written form of 瞑, the character for closing the eyes. Older Chinese texts also use it in dim or fading-light contexts; Japanese character records list the reading kurai (“dark”).

What 𭿜 means

Read it as 瞑, “to close the eyes.” Premodern examples include Taiping Guangji, a Song-era story collection, and later Song- and Ming-era poetry and travel writing, where 𭿜 appears in contexts of sleep, dusk, or dimness.

Why does 𭿜 show as a box?

The current font may lack its glyph. 𭿜 sits beyond the Basic Multilingual Plane; UTF-16 represents it with two code units. A font that cannot draw it may show a box or blank while the text still retains the character.

Why does 𭿜 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
