What 𭿬 means
The source passage shows which look is meant. The early Shuowen jiezi character dictionary glosses 矉 as eyes opened wide in resentment. Zhuangzi, an ancient philosophical text, uses it for Xishi, a celebrated beauty, frowning in pain.
A village woman copies Xishi’s look, thinking it will make her beautiful; onlookers shut their doors or flee. As of 2026, 東施效顰 is a Chinese idiom for imitation that backfires. A 2008 Korean Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean) column reads 矉 as 빈 (bin) and explains 효빈 (hyo-bin) as imitating a frown.
