What 𮂊 means
It is another written form of 福.
The older 福 first appears in oracle-bone inscriptions—writing carved on animal bones and turtle shells for divination. Early forms show hands raising wine at an altar, a prayer for abundance and protection; later scripts regularized the character.
Why is 福 turned upside down?
It turns a New Year wish into a pun about fortune arriving.
In a long-standing Chinese Spring Festival custom, 福 is placed on doors as a wish for happiness and good fortune. In Mandarin, 倒 (dào, inverted) sounds like 到 (dào, arrive), so an upside-down sign hints that fortune has arrived.
