What does 𮅜 mean?
It is a rare written form for 笳, an old wind instrument.
The Chinese book 槎庵小乘, a collection of music accounts, glosses 𮅜 as 笳. It describes a reed leaf rolled into a whistle and tells of frontier tunes moving homesick travelers and soldiers under siege.
A Song-era encyclopedia, 太平御览, describes a related reed-headed bamboo pipe as coming from northern peoples and entering Tang court music. The later text preserves a competing story of an exile who made the music while missing home; neither account settles who first created the instrument.
