What 𮊇 means
Its main Mandarin reading is bǎo.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education’s 2024 variant dictionary lists 飹 as a variant of 飽, with Mandarin reading bǎo. It traces 飹 to 正字通, a seventeenth-century Chinese character dictionary, where it is called a common written form of an older 飽 spelling.
The 1716 Kangxi Dictionary cites the earlier rhyme dictionary 《集韻》 for a separate reading, liǔ, “bait.” Context decides which reading fits.
Why does Unicode show 飹?
It is the representative glyph used in Unicode’s chart.
Unicode 18.0’s Extension F chart represents 𮊇 with 飹. SAT’s Unicode 10.0 source list, from a University of Tokyo database of the Taishō Buddhist canon (a collection of Buddhist scriptures), records a different source shape, with 沓 underneath. Both records refer to this code point.
