cjk unified ideograph-2e401

CJK Ideograph 2E401

𮐁 is a rare Chinese ideograph preserved in a dictionary citation, but the entry gives no clear standalone definition. It supplies an old pronunciation clue beside a note on pungent taste; the glyph may show as a box in a font without it.

What 𮐁 means

It is preserved in a dictionary note on pungent taste. The citation says the lost Chinese dictionary 字苑 wrote 𮐁 and gives 卢葛切. This is fanqie, an old sound-spelling method: the first character supplies an initial sound, and the second cues the rhyme and tone. It then quotes “辛甚曰辣,” meaning a very strong pungent taste is called 辣. The citation does not give a dependable modern Mandarin reading for 𮐁.

Why does 𮐁 show as a box?
