What 𮐄 means
It means “grass stem.” A Korean Hanja dictionary links 𮐄 to 莛. Hanja are Chinese characters used in Korean. The Han-era dictionary Shuowen Jiezi defines 莛 as a stem; 艹 means grass, 廷 gives the sound.
Han-era history Han Shu quotes court writer Dongfang Shuo: 以莛撞鐘, “strike a bell with a grass stalk.” A slight tool cannot ring a great bell.
Unicode’s source tag USAT-04497 links 𮐄 to the Taishō Shinshū Daizōkyō, a printed Buddhist canon (1924–1934). That date belongs to the edition, not the older word.
