Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, explains 蒸 as the inner stalk of stripped hemp, once burned as a wick. Later texts use 蒸 for rising heat or vapor and for cooking with steam. 烝 supplies the sound of 蒸 and also appears with the older sense “heat rising.”
