Han ideograph 2E5A6

𮖦 makes sense through the Chan exchange in which it appears. A monk asks Xuefeng Yicun, a Chan (Chinese Zen Buddhist) teacher, how to demonstrate the teaching; Xuefeng raises a fly-whisk, a handled brush. The gesture is the clue to the scene, while the character sits inside the written question.

What 𮖦 means

Read it through the Chan exchange. In the Buddhist chronicle 佛祖歷代通載, a monk asks Xuefeng Yicun, a Chan teacher, how he will demonstrate the teaching. Xuefeng answers by raising his fly-whisk, a handled brush used as a teaching gesture.

An earlier version in 景德傳燈錄, presented in 1004, writes 捶 at the same point where 佛祖歷代通載, compiled in 1341, has 𮖦. This is a textual parallel within the story; it does not establish that the two characters can replace each other in ordinary writing.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𮖦 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
