What 𮚜 means
It writes the Zhuang verb cawx, “to buy.” Zhuang is a Tai language spoken mainly in Guangxi, southern China. Sawndip adapts Chinese character forms or parts to write Zhuang; this verb has other recorded forms.
A 697 inscription from China’s Tang dynasty uses a Zhuang form read as “paddy field.” It is early evidence for Sawndip, not this glyph’s date.
Zhuang cawx, Thai ซื้อ and Lao ຊື້ descend from Proto-Tai, the reconstructed common ancestor of Tai languages. The official Latin-based Standard Zhuang orthography began in 1957 and was revised in 1982; it spells cawx.
