𮜫

cjk unified ideograph-2e72b

Frown variant

6268/7473

𮜫 is a variant of 顰, a Chinese character for frowning; simplified Chinese uses 颦. A Tang Buddhist text uses it in 𮜫眉 (“knitted brows”); Ming and Qing writings use it too. The Chinese classic Zhuangzi tells how 東施效顰 means copying a beauty’s frown without understanding why it works. Shuowen Jiezi’s Han-era gloss describes 顰 as frowning while wading; that explains the word, not this glyph’s origin.

1

Why does 𮜫 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs Extension F block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
