cjk unified ideograph-2e9cc

Han ideograph 𮧌

6941/7473

𮧌 is a rare variant of 嗇, the traditional Chinese character also written 啬 in simplified Chinese. In Mandarin, 嗇 can mean “frugal” or “stingy,” but older uses point to grain storage and harvest; context settles the reading.

What 𮧌 means

The older meaning was about storing and harvesting grain.

On Shang oracle-bone inscriptions (writing on turtle shells and animal bones used for divination), 嗇 is interpreted as wheat stored in a granary; Western Zhou bronze inscriptions use it for harvesting grain. 嗇 later also meant conserving or being sparing. In the classical line 服田力嗇,乃亦有秋, it means working the fields toward a harvest, not stinginess.

1

Why does 𮧌 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
