What 𮭥 means
Type 2EB65, then press AltX in Microsoft Word.
If you see a square, the font may lack its glyph; the character code can still be present in the text.
What does this bird character mean?
In Mandarin, gōng names a pheasant-like bird.
In Song-era Guangyun, a Chinese pronunciation dictionary, the traditional form 䳍 is glossed as a pheasant-like bird whose cry gives it its name. The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s 2024 dictionary preserves that older gloss and adds a zoological sense for tinamous, ground-dwelling birds native to Central and South America.
Why did a Buddhist-text project encode this form?
To preserve the exact glyph in digital Buddhist scriptures.
The Unicode chart’s source identifier USAT-60391 links this glyph to the SAT Daizōkyō Text Database Committee, a University of Tokyo project. Its rare-character submissions came from the Taishō Shinshū Daizōkyō, a printed collection of Buddhist scriptures published in 1924, so digital editions could retain the forms used in the text.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𮭥 show as a square?
The font displaying it may not include this rare glyph. In a 2018 note, the University of Tokyo’s SAT site recommended the Hanazono Mincho font for CJK Extension F—one set of rare East Asian ideographs—because few fonts covered the full block then.
