What 𮮠 means
It represents embroidered patterns and, more broadly, needlework.
Oracle-bone divination records—writing scratched on bones or shells—use 黹 as a sound-based loan for a state's name. Bronze inscriptions describe embroidered edging on a dark robe. Scholars read the early shape as stitched decoration but debate its exact motif. The Han-era Shuowen Jiezi, an early dictionary, defines 黹 as sewing clothes with needle and thread; later it also served as an index heading for related characters.
