What means
It packs two Chinese characters into one written unit.
In Mandarin, its reading remains dàjí, “great good fortune”; a ligature combines characters on the page without fusing their sounds. Chinese ligatures appear at least as early as Shang oracle-bone inscriptions (writing incised on shells and bones), later on bronze inscriptions and bamboo or wooden slips. The ways characters were joined changed over time.
Modern Spring Festival calligraphy also combines auspicious words into compact decorative forms. At a documented 2024 Spring Festival event in Nanjing, calligraphers wrote such combined characters as blessings; fits that festive visual tradition.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
