What 𮳉 means

So digital services could handle hard-to-write names.

China’s 2023 draft amendment to its GB 18030 character-encoding standard gathered rare, hard-to-write Chinese personal and place-name characters for administrative records. After expert review, an early list of over 900 candidates was narrowed to 622. Unicode aligned the set with Extension I so systems could exchange these names; it lists 𮳉 in the character set for China’s Ministry of Public Security identity system.

Why does 𮳉 show as a box?

The font on your screen may not include its glyph.

𮳉 is encoded in a supplementary Unicode plane, an extra range for characters beyond the first large block. If an app’s font does not include this glyph, it may show a box or fallback character even while the text still contains 𮳉. The display changes, but the stored character stays the same.

Why does 𮳉 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
