What means
Unicode’s chart shows in the form 璧, “jade disc.”
In Mandarin, the corresponding character 璧 is pronounced bì and names a flat, round jade object with a hole through its center. Unicode’s source record ties to GIDC23-331, an entry in China’s Ministry of Public Security ID system in 2023.
What came before its code point?
The jade object and its familiar character form came first.
The written history of 璧 reaches back to the Shang dynasty, with oracle-bone inscriptions—records carved on turtle shells or animal bones—and bronze inscriptions. Physical bi discs appear in Liangzhu burials in eastern China dated 3300–2200 BCE. Liangzhu was a late Stone Age culture; elite graves paired bi discs with cong, squared jade tubes, as ritual objects and signs of rank.
A Zhou ritual text assigns a blue bi to rites for Heaven. That later ceremonial use adds a role alongside the burial and status uses documented at Liangzhu.

1Questions people ask
2Why does show as a box?
The active font or app likely lacks a glyph for this character. A box is a missing-glyph marker; the text may still contain the correct character.
vs 璧: are they the same character?
No. Unicode shows in 璧’s familiar form, but they are separate encoded characters. In a name or record, keep the character that the original source requires.
