What means
A rare Chinese form linked to 碯, the older agate character.
In Guangyun, an early 11th-century Chinese dictionary organized by rhyme, 碯 appears in 碼碯, a name for a gemlike stone. Modern Chinese writes the agate word 玛瑙 (traditional 瑪瑙).
Why was added to identity records?
To preserve rare forms in citizen-name records.
The 2023 GB 18030 update—China’s standard for computer text—placed it in a character set for government population records. The stated need was accurate citizen-name certification.
