Rare Chinese personal-name character

375/622

𮵦 is a rare Chinese character in public-security identity records, used when a person’s exact written name must be preserved. Its practical role is keeping uncommon name characters intact in population data. It entered the international character standard through China’s 2023 ID-character set.

What 𮵦 means

It preserves rare characters in official name records. China’s Ministry of Education said in 2019 that public-security systems needed a special font so rare characters in names would work on household registrations and resident ID cards. Unicode lists 𮵦 in the Ministry of Public Security’s 2023 ID set. In August 2023, Unicode announced 622 urgently needed characters from this effort, which China’s GB 18030 standard for exchanging Chinese text also mapped.
