CJK Unified Ideograph-2ED8A

411/622

𮶊 is a rare Han character from a character set used by China’s Ministry of Public Security for identity-card registration. A 2023 encoding proposal assigned permanent codes to characters from its identity-card font because private-use codes can fail when text moves between systems.

What 𮶊 means

To preserve exact characters in identity-card records. Its source set came from a special font for registering resident identity cards.

Some characters in the font had only private-use codes—reserved positions that systems could interpret only if they shared the same custom mapping. The encoding proposal assigned shared codes to the supplemental set so records could move between systems without relying on one local font.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𮶊 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 15.1 (2023), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
