What 𮶒 means

To preserve a name character across identity systems. China’s Ministry of Public Security, the national agency responsible for policing and public safety, used a special population-information font to register resident identity cards. Unicode’s source data links 𮶒 to that ID system.

In 2023, a draft update to China’s mandatory GB 18030 character standard addressed a practical problem: some characters in that font had only private-use codes, locally assigned slots that other systems might not interpret the same way. The update proposed permanent assignments to support identity checks and information exchange across systems; Unicode accepted the group on an accelerated schedule.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𮶒 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
