Han character 𮷕

486/622

𮷕 is a rare Chinese character in a font used by China’s Ministry of Public Security for resident identity-card registration. Unicode gave it a permanent code point in 2023 so official text systems could exchange it reliably; that dates the encoding, not the character’s origin.

What 𮷕 means

It identifies a rare character in China’s identity-record font. The Unicode entry traces it to a character set made by China’s Ministry of Public Security for resident identity-card registration. Its 2023 submission identifies the glyph but gives no spoken reading or dictionary gloss.

A 2023 draft update to GB 18030, China’s text-encoding standard, included 622 characters from the font. Unicode fast-tracked the set as urgently needed in China. Some characters in the font had private-use codes—values assigned locally by systems—which hindered data exchange, according to a 2023 report to the IRG. Unicode’s permanent assignment gives this glyph a stable character identity across systems that support it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𮷕 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 15.1 (2023), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
