What means
It preserves rare characters in Chinese identity records.
Its source entry belongs to a supplementary set for hard-to-encode characters in residents' names and place names, so the written name can survive exchange between systems.
Why was added?
To give a hard-to-transfer name character a stable code.
China proposed the set in 2022 as part of an update to GB 18030, its national character-encoding standard. Unicode added Extension I in 2023; China's amendment took effect on 29 September 2024.
A specialist character for exact names in Chinese identity records.
In a name or record, don't swap it for a similar-looking character.
