Rare Chinese character

𮸥 is a rare variant of 䦖, an old Chinese character with gate-related readings. In Mandarin, 䦖 is read xiá for the sound of a gate, or xié in the name of a gate in Zheng. Unicode’s source record links this exact form to China’s Ministry of Public Security ID system in 2023.

What 𮸥 means

Its recorded meaning comes from the older 䦖.

Older dictionaries give 䦖 two Mandarin readings: xiá, “the sound of a gate,” and xié, the name of a gate in the state of Zheng during China’s Spring and Autumn period. The Zuo Zhuan, an early Chinese chronicle, records that gate’s name as 桔柣.

Questions people ask

Why does 𮸥 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
