Simplified Form of 𩢀

𮹄 is linked to 𩢀, a Chinese character glossed as “to keep or rear mules and horses.” The older form appears in a practical plan for using pack animals to move military grain.

What 𮹄 means

It is an analogically simplified form of 𩢀. It uses the simplified horse component 马 where 𩢀 has traditional 馬, while the right-hand part 屯 remains. A Chinese dictionary glosses 𩢀 as “gather and keep or rear mules and horses.”

A Tang-era memorial by the writer Chen Zi’ang proposes taxing households to buy mules and horses for hauling grain to frontier troops; the older form appears in that practical context. In 2023, Unicode included 𮹄 in an expedited set drawn from a draft amendment to China’s mandatory GB 18030 character-encoding standard.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𮹄 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
