What 𱁲 means
The note suggests 岡 (“mountain ridge”), but leaves 𱁲 unresolved.
An entry in Xuanying’s Yiqie jing yinyi (一切經音義), a glossary explaining difficult words in Buddhist scriptures, preserves the phrase 鞕𱁲. It says the sutra context suggests 岡 as the second character; an older pronunciation note may be wrong.
Xuanying’s note, compiled around 649, says the dictionaries he checked did not list 𱁲 and that its source was unknown, so he leaves it in the text for later study. The 2020 encoding date marks digital standardization, not the glyph’s origin.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𱁲 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
