Korean Fish-Name Character

𱆭 is a Korean-made hanja (a Chinese-script character used in Korean) for a local fish name in Kim Ryeo’s 1803 Jinhae account. The fish entered rice paddies from streams and damaged plants with its fins, so farmers blocked the channels. The record calls its muddy-smelling flesh inedible.

What 𱆭 means

It names a fish in a Korean coastal record.

The first recorded use is in Uhae-ieo-bo, Kim Ryeo’s book of local sea life, completed during his exile in Jinhae in 1803. The entry describes a blue-green fish with two knife-like fins beneath its cheeks. A 2024 study says Kim likely created hanja characters for regional fish names and their traits; scholars disagree over which species some entries describe.
