What 𱇳 means
It applies the simplified fish component 鱼. The Hanyu Da Zidian (1986–1990), a major Chinese character dictionary, records 𱇳 as an analogical simplification of 鮻: the traditional fish component 魚 is written with its simplified form 鱼. In Mandarin, 鮻 is read suō.
Does 鮻 name a real fish?
It has a fish-name gloss and a legendary account. The Kangxi Dictionary, completed in 1716, quotes the Shan Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas), a Chinese text combining geography and marvels. It describes an 鮻 near Mount Gushe with a human face and hands and a fish’s body; seeing it brings wind and waves. English dictionary glosses include “dace,” but that does not identify the legendary creature as a known species.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𱇳 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
