What 𱊞 means
It is a simplified variant used in a bird’s name. The Hanyu Da Zidian, a large dictionary of Chinese characters, lists 𱊞 as an analogical simplification of 𪄠. Its right-hand bird component changes from 鳥 in that older form to simplified 鸟 here. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education lists 𪄠 as a variant of 鶒; in 鸂鶒 (Mandarin Chinese xīchì), 鶒 is the second character in the bird’s name.
Why does 鸂鶒 refer to a mandarin duck?
The bird names shifted over time. From the Song dynasty onward, writers increasingly used 鸂鶒 for the colorful bird now called a mandarin duck. Earlier sources used 鸳鸯 for a different bird, now called the ruddy shelduck, a red-brown duck. An older use of either name may therefore point to a different species than its modern label suggests.
