What 𱊷 means

It names lye or alkali, and can describe something as salty.

Sawndip is a traditional character script for Zhuang, made by adapting Chinese characters and their parts to the language. A 1989 dictionary of Old Zhuang characters records 𱊷 as a spelling of ndaengq.

Where does ndaengq come from?

It continues reconstructed Proto-Tai *ɗaŋᴮ, the word for lye.

Proto-Tai is a reconstructed ancestor of the Tai language family. Thai ด่าง (dàang), Lao ດັ່ງ (dang), and Shan လင်ႇ (làng) are related words in that family, not pronunciations of 𱊷.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𱊷 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
