What 𱏿 means
It names a village near Rizhao, Shandong. Residents’ account traces the character to 1756, when ancestors are said to have coined it for the settlement. They explain its left part, 冫, as two waterways and its right part, 口, as the village where they meet.
Why is 𱏿 written as 栈?
The village switched to 栈 after the rare form proved hard to enter. In a 2022 report, residents said dictionaries did not include it and computer input methods could not produce it; 栈 has the same sound in this place name.
