What 𱔐 means

It came from a library built for rare name characters.

Unicode's Extension H proposal links 𱔐 to a special character library for China's population records. In 2015, China's Ministry of Public Security upgraded it because its system could not enter uncommon personal- and place-name characters.

China's 2018 Unicode submission says police had collected uncommon personal- and place-name characters for 65 years. It notes that most local offices still wrote them by hand, while some had developed their own fonts.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𱔐 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
