Han character 㜯

816/6592

Old Chinese dictionaries give 㜯 both a neutral designation for a woman and a disparaging one. The related form 娭 appears in ancient Chu manuscripts, while later dictionaries record 㜯 itself. If someone sends 㜯 alone, context matters: the written record cannot tell you whether they mean respect or contempt.

What 㜯 means

Older dictionaries give 㜯 both a neutral and a contemptuous reading.

Yupian, an old Chinese dictionary, glosses it as 婦人之稱 (“a designation for a woman”); Jiyun gives 婦人賤稱 (“a contemptuous designation for a woman”).

How is 㜯 related to 娭?

㜯 is recorded as a variant of 娭.

The older form 娭 appears in manuscripts from the ancient state of Chu and in the small-seal entry of Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary. Later dictionaries, including Yupian and Jiyun, record 㜯 itself. The record points to a written variant, not a separate one-off invention.

Some readers may know 娭 through the regional expression 娭毑, a respectful term for a grandmother or older woman. As of 2026-09-06, a dictionary records that sense for 娭; it belongs to 娭 in the expression, not automatically to 㜯.

What should I do if someone sends 㜯?

A bare 㜯 cannot show whether the sender means respect or contempt.

The dictionaries preserve both a neutral designation and a disparaging label. Read the surrounding sentence or ask what the writer means; avoid using 㜯 yourself as a form of address to a woman.

As of 2026-09-06, a dictionary describes 㜯’s displayed shape as environment-dependent: a phone or computer using a different font may draw its strokes differently. A changed outline alone does not mean the message contains a different character.

Historical and lexicographic; its records range from a neutral designation to a disparaging label.

Do not use 㜯 to address a woman; an old dictionary gives it a contemptuous reading.

Why does 㜯 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs Extension A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
