What 㪟 means
㪟 is a written variant of 敦. It records an alternate spelling of the same Chinese character rather than a separate word. An old dictionary note treats it as 敦 and cites Hou Hanshu, a history of the Later Han dynasty.
敦 has several historical senses: thickness, urging, sincerity, esteem, and an ancient vessel for grain. The early Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi also glosses it as angry reproach or questioning. Japanese kanji dictionaries list 敦(㪟) for earnest or urging senses and for the vessel.
Should I use 㪟 or 敦?
Use 㪟 to preserve a source; use 敦 for ordinary writing. The choice preserves a written form; it does not create a separate meaning.
As of 2026, a blank box or different stroke design usually points to font coverage: a CJK font may not contain 㪟, or another font may draw its strokes differently. The character can still be intact even when your current font cannot show it.

Questions people ask
1Why does 㪟 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
