Han character 㮿

1984/6592

㮿 is an uncommon Han character for a kind of tree, read bì in Mandarin (roughly “bee” with a falling pitch). A Wuwei inscription also uses it for a word pronounced like 畢.

Text symbol

What 㮿 means

It names a kind of tree. The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi analyzes 㮿 as 木 for its tree meaning plus 畢 for sound.

A study published in 2024 reads a Han-era wooden writing slip from Wuwei as using 㮿 to spell a word pronounced like 畢; this is a sound loan, not the tree name.

An uncommon dictionary character naming a tree.

A box usually means the font lacks 㮿; the character itself has not changed.

1

Why does 㮿 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs Extension A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
